Mungo and the Willandra Lakes

Looking After The Willandra

Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area Council

The management of the Willandra Lakes WHA is overseen by a Ministerial Council. This Council is advised by a Community Management Council (CMC) made up of an independent chair and representatives of the traditional landowners, existing leaseholders, and Commonwealth and state government agencies.

The CMC receives advice from two sources. An Elders Council, made up of Elders and delegates from the Paakantyi and Ngyiampaa tribes, oversees all issues on behalf of the traditional tribal owners of the land. A Technical and Scientific Advisory Committee (TSAC) consists of scientists with expertise relevant to the WLR, traditional landowners, existing leaseholders, and government agencies.
